A production workload may combine event intake, identity federation, document extraction, retrieval, model inference, business approvals and several downstream APIs. AWS AIP-C01 expects developers to choose application integration patterns that preserve correctness under delay, retry, duplicate messages and partial failure. This guide focuses on system boundaries and operating semantics, not on the quality of one model’s words.

Choose synchronous boundaries and authenticated APIs

An interactive chat response may need prompt streaming and a short latency budget, while indexing thousands of files or reviewing a loan application may be an asynchronous process. Separate the user-facing acknowledgement from the final business result. Define a request ID and status state for long-running work, and ensure only the authorized caller can retrieve it. Holding one HTTP connection open for minutes increases failure risk and makes it easy for clients to resubmit work when a browser times out.

API Gateway can provide an authenticated ingress and request validation, while Lambda or containerized workers implement application policy and Bedrock invocation. The choice depends on response time, concurrency, dependencies and runtime limits. Do not send AWS credentials or privileged model identifiers directly to browsers. A model gateway should enforce allowed model routes, usage budgets, identity, PII handling and trace correlation. Put tool authorization near the protected system rather than assuming a successful API Gateway login authorizes every business operation.

Use events and queues according to their semantics

EventBridge suits event-driven routing for supported event sources; SQS provides durable message buffering for workloads that need a queue. Delivery and redelivery behavior can produce duplicate work unless consumers are idempotent. Include a stable business operation ID and a dead-letter recovery process. A notification that a document arrived is not proof parsing, indexing or answer generation completed. Each stage should emit a result or failure state that downstream workers can inspect without asking a foundation model to guess what happened.

Use Step Functions for controlled workflow state

A multi-step application can require validation, retrieval, model extraction, deterministic checks, human approval and a final write. Step Functions can represent orchestration, branching and waiting where those patterns fit the service constraints. Version the state machine and define explicit timeout and compensation paths. A failed document extraction should not fall through to a payment approval. Use parallel branches only when their actions are independent and when aggregation can handle missing or conflicting results. The state machine is a business-control artifact, not merely developer convenience.

Federate identities without broad shared credentials

A user may authenticate through an enterprise identity provider, but downstream tools must still enforce user, tenant and resource scope. Distinguish the runtime service role from the delegated end-user identity and record how entitlements are propagated. An agent should not use one high-privilege shared credential to update any account simply because its generated tool argument contains a plausible account ID. Integrations with external CRM and ERP systems need secrets management, rotation, audited scopes and denial tests. Least privilege belongs on every hop of the workflow.

Plan for large documents and multimodal processing

Files arriving from email, storage or partner systems need type checking, malware screening, provenance and sometimes OCR or speech transcription. Process large files asynchronously and track the extraction version, source owner and final structured output. A malformed attachment or missing source identifier should go to an exception queue. If a knowledge base sync fails, the assistant should not continue presenting old data as current. The data ingestion design is a dependency of trustworthy enterprise automation.

Establish retry and compensation contracts

Network timeouts, quota errors and unavailable tools need error-specific handling. Retry transient reads with bounded backoff; do not repeat an irreversible write merely because its reply was lost. Use idempotency keys or queryable transaction state for create and update operations. When a multi-system workflow partially completes, identify the compensating action and its owner. Some accounting or legal events cannot be rolled back as if they were a text draft. Document which failures should stop the process and notify a person.

Release integrations through tested change controls

Version API schemas, Step Functions definitions, model routes, IAM roles, prompt templates, tool schemas and knowledge-base indexes together where they change observable behavior. Integrate with a CI/CD process that runs deterministic contract tests and risk-weighted model evaluations. The GenAI release strategy explains the deployment gate; enterprise integration requires proving the consumer still understands messages and can safely recover from changes. Preserve rollback compatibility for queues and stateful workflows.

Trace request, event, inference and side effect

A complete trace should connect inbound identity and request ID to EventBridge/SQS messages, workflow state, model invocation, tool call and actual business record. Avoid logging raw sensitive documents without explicit retention controls. Monitor queue age, dead-letter volume, retriable error rate, token expenditure and time to committed outcome. A dashboard that displays model latency without end-to-end completion gives an incomplete picture. Operators need to know which system owns a stuck operation, and how to resume or compensate it without replaying earlier steps.

Invoice workflow: reconcile failures and approvals

An invoice uploaded to S3 triggers an event carrying a stable source ID. Validation records the file hash, business owner, and classification before extraction identifies supplier details and amounts. Deterministic rules compare those fields with ERP reference data, while the model proposes an exception category rather than approving a payment. The workflow routes uncertain or high-value cases for authorized human review, then uses a scoped integration identity and idempotency key for the final ERP write. Each stage emits a queryable status so operators can reconcile the business ledger instead of treating a model response as proof of posting. Failure tests should also include malformed attachments, delayed approvals, and temporary model throttling.

Now send the same upload notification twice and disconnect the ERP adapter after it commits one update. The queue consumer should detect the duplicated source or operation ID and avoid an extra write. The business process may still need a compensating action if an external system partially completed a broader transaction. Model output should be treated as an input to the workflow, not as proof of posting. A clean architecture identifies which service owns the final state and who may authorize correction when two systems disagree.

Run a deployment test where the extraction schema adds an optional field while an older consumer still processes messages. Verify compatibility and the resulting validation behavior. Then revoke the workflow’s external API credentials and check that it fails with a monitored authorization error rather than silently using an administrator identity. Version schema, route and integration configuration together where the change affects behavior. A production-ready event system can explain not just that a message was delivered, but what business outcome followed and whether recovery is safe.

Enterprise generative AI rarely consists of one synchronous prompt.
