Hybrid search and reranking can improve relevance, but additional sophistication also increases latency, cost and debugging complexity. This article focuses on query-time decisions after documents have been parsed and indexed.

Define what a successful retrieval looks like

Create representative questions and identify the evidence a correct answer would need. For a support policy task, an answer may require a specific version, country or customer entitlement. Label acceptable and unacceptable source passages independently of the generator. A fluent answer based on the wrong document must count as retrieval failure. Track recall of relevant material, precision within the context actually passed to the model, freshness and access-policy compliance. Do not start by choosing an arbitrary top-k value.

Understand the limits of semantic similarity

Embeddings can return conceptually related text even when a query requires an exact error code, contract identifier or SKU. A semantically close passage about a different product may cause a plausible but wrong response. Lexical search can be stronger for exact tokens and rare terms, while vector search helps paraphrases and conceptual questions. Choose how to combine them based on measured query classes. The existing vector search design explains index dimensions and distance choices; relevance decisions are a separate layer.

Build hybrid search without uncontrolled score mixing

Hybrid retrieval combines lexical and vector candidates using a supported fusion or ranking approach. Normalize or fuse scores carefully: raw scores from different retrieval methods need not share the same scale. A simple reciprocal-rank fusion baseline can be compared against more complex learned ranking. Test identifiers, synonyms and queries that mention two constraints. Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases may support HYBRID or SEMANTIC overrides for compatible vector stores; verify the Bedrock retrieval configuration and store-specific capabilities before promising the same behavior everywhere.

Use metadata filtering for authorization and authority

A metadata filter can narrow results by product, locale, effective date or tenant, but a filter is only as trustworthy as ingestion metadata. Authorization should be enforced using authenticated user claims and protected source policy, not values copied from the user’s prompt. A malicious query saying ‘tenant=administrator’ must not extend retrieval scope. Test two identities against the same question and verify the restricted passages never enter the model context. Keep the approved filter criteria and resolved identity in a trace without revealing sensitive data to a lower-privilege operator.

Apply reranking after retrieval, not instead of it

A reranker scores retrieved candidates for a particular query and may improve which passages enter the model’s limited context. But it cannot recover evidence omitted by first-stage retrieval. Measure recall at a wide candidate set, then compare reranked top results to a lexical/vector baseline. Include latency and per-request reranking charges in the evaluation. Rerankers may also favor convincing but outdated sources if freshness and authority are not part of the selection policy. Restrict the candidate set to authorized content before calling any additional model.

Transform complex questions cautiously

A long question can include multiple subquestions, different document types or ambiguous entities. Query decomposition may retrieve evidence for each requested part, and query expansion can increase recall for synonyms. Both add extra inference calls and may drift away from the user’s intent. Preserve the original query and use constraints so generated subqueries cannot silently seek different tenant or sensitive records. Test whether decomposition improves complete answer coverage without adding false matches. Record transformations in traces to make a later bad answer explainable.

Control chunking and context assembly

Small chunks may separate a definition from its condition; large chunks waste context and can mix authorizations. Hierarchical chunking or adjacent passage expansion can preserve structure when documents have sections and tables. Assemble context with source IDs, effective dates and citation offsets, and deduplicate near-identical documents. A model should not see several stale copies of the same paragraph as independent evidence. If there are no current sources, return a documented no-evidence outcome instead of forcing a generation pass that invents missing details.

Evaluate the pipeline in stages

Build a golden set for exact lookup, cross-document reasoning, terminology variation, conflicting versions, revoked files and adversarial document text. Measure retrieval recall and rank separately from grounded answer correctness. A generator that ignores a perfectly retrieved passage is a generation problem; the right model with a missing passage is a retrieval problem. The Bedrock RAG architecture supplies ingestion and context controls; this query-stage evaluation finds which stage actually needs revision.

Monitor freshness and index operations

Capture document version, metadata schema, embedding model, index version, reranker and query-transform version. Alert when a synchronization job fails or revoked content remains searchable. Monitor no-result and low-confidence rates, p95 retrieval latency, filter selectivity and user-reported source mismatches. A new embedding model may require reindexing; do not mix incompatible vectors silently. If source deletion has regulatory significance, test the entire deletion propagation path including caches and copies, not just the S3 origin.

Worked case: identical product names

A business sells two similarly named products under different regulatory conditions. A user asks for a return exception on an exact SKU. Semantic retrieval finds a broadly similar policy for the wrong product; lexical search finds the SKU; metadata filters limit region and effective date; reranking prioritizes the current applicable exception. Test the same request from two users with different entitlements and after one policy is retired. The correct output depends on source authority and filter enforcement as much as similarity scoring.

How to compare retrieval candidates fairly

Construct a labeled set of questions representing exact codes, natural-language descriptions, regional exceptions, conflicting policy versions and multiple documents needed for one answer. For each query, record acceptable source IDs and information that must not be returned. Compare lexical-only, semantic-only and hybrid retrieval using the same collection snapshot. Report relevant recall at the candidate stage and precision in the smaller context ultimately sent to the model. Avoid evaluating only final response fluency, because the generator may conceal irrelevant retrieval with confident prose.

Test reranking on candidate sets produced by each first-stage search method. If the required policy never reached the candidate set, reranking cannot rescue it. Examine whether the reranker consistently places more authoritative or current passages above older but lexically similar content. Include timing and cost, and maintain a simple baseline that can be restored if the reranking service becomes unavailable. A more sophisticated ranking configuration should earn its complexity by reducing measured bad-answer and manual-correction rates.

Run an authorization test with two synthetic users who have different access to the same document family. The metadata filter must be derived from authenticated context and applied before sensitive text enters the model or reranker. Then revoke one document and query while the index is updating. Record how the system responds during the propagation window. If the process cannot prove that a revoked source is absent, it should withhold that class of answer rather than returning a polished statement from evidence the user no longer has permission to see.

Retrieval is production-quality when every returned passage is relevant, permitted, fresh and traceable. Hybrid search and reranking should earn their cost through held-out improvements, not exist because additional AWS features look sophisticated.

Vector search is only one stage in a production retrieval pipeline.
